"Not to hurt the creatures brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission--to be of service to them wherever they require it." — Saint Francis
As I posted about earlier, Craft Hope is collecting hand-made rags to help aid in the Gulf Coast clean-up efforts. Many crafters are upcycling old towels, sheets, clothes they had on hand. Since we didn't have any, I ran by Walmart and got a package of cheap washcloths (I think they were $4 for 20 of them).
I have wanted to try my hand at applique with my sewing machine for some time, but had not had a particular project that I was ready to experiment with. Hmmm...Craft Hope needs washcloths, I need practice with applique...I guess you know what came next.
Applique towels!
Sure, they are going to get ruined in like 5 minutes, but even an oil soaked animal and its caregiver deserve to have a cute towel right?! Besides, it gave me a great opportunity to practice applique and I learned a LOT by making so many towels (I also learned that my sewing machine probably needs to be serviced soon).
I made a few with the Craft Hope bird logo, hearts, Christian Fish, and stars. In the end, I am donating 22 towels to the cause.
Do you have old towels or sheets hanging around your house? You can cut them up and donate them to the project. They don't have to be cute--I promise!
