More Child Abuse Scandals Within The Catholic Church

The Catholic Church likes to pride itself on being the protector of children, though we all know they seem more concerned with protecting child-raping priests, their image, and their all-important bank account.

But recently, the Church hired  what they dubbed a "child protection official" to monitor church groups to ensure pedophiles did not gain access to children in the church’s congregations. Notice, though, he wasn't monitoring the Church, just church groups; the Catholic Church is still protecting pedophile priests.

At any rate, that "child protection "official", Christopher Jarvis, a married father of four, has been caught uploading pictures of children being abused to a website, and of having over 4,000 pictures of child pornography on his home computers.

This is who the Church put their faith in to protect children. Just more of the same.
Jarvis has admitted to 12 counts of making, possessing and distributing indecent images  and is likely to face jail when he returns to court for sentencing next month.

Church spokesman David Pond said: “Mr Jarvis was suspended from his position as soon as the diocese became aware in March of the police investigation. The Bishop took that action and since then the Church has worked closely with the police.”

Nice to see a church official stand up and do what's right to these pedophiles, but, one has to wonder, would the Bishop have turned the man in, called the police, and worked with authorities, if the possessor of that child porn was a priest?

Rigali Retires: Protecting Child Rapists Is Hard

Cardinal Justin Rigali, the leader of the Philadelphia Roman Catholic archdiocese, which has been under fire, and under the microscope during a continuing scandal over sexual misconduct by priests--which is a polite way of calling them child rapists--has decided to retire.

Protecting and transferring pedophiles is hard work and he's done tuckered out.

See, Rigali's archdiocese, which is the sixth largest in the United States, home to some 1.5 million Catholics, has been accused of concealing the sexual abuse, molestation and rape, of children, in order to avoid a costly scandal.

The key word there is costly. Not the cost of a child's childhood, not the cost of a child's dignity, or trust or faith, but cost as in money that the church would have had to pay out.

They aren't about children, they're about money. The Pope needs more red Prada slip-ons.

Rigali, archbishop in Philadelphia since 2003, has been struggling to contain the pedophilia scandal in the aftermath of a grand jury report issued at the beginning of this year, after which three priests, a monsignor and a church teacher were indicted as a result of the report.

The grand jury report concluded: "We would have assumed, by the year 2011, after all the revelations both here and around the world, that the church would not risk its youth by leaving them in the presence of priests subject to substantial evidence of abuse. That is not the case." The grand jury found 37 such priests who have been kept in assignments that exposed them to children.

Thirty-seven abusers, molesters and rapists kept in their jobs, working with children so the Catholic Church could avoid a "costly scandal". I guess it doesn't matter to Rigali and the Catholic Church and the Pope how much this scandal has cost the children.

Father Unni Stands Up To Catholic Bigotry

It seems that the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, responding to criticism that it was actually sanctioning a Gay Pride celebration, has announced that it had ordered a South End church to cancel a Mass scheduled for next weekend that was themed, “All are Welcome."

And perhaps subtitle it, *"Unless You're Queer."

Well, the LGBT community is not amused.

It seems that St. Cecilia Parish in Boston had planned a “liturgy to commemorate Boston Pride 2011" and, in a church bulletin, announced: “The Rainbow Ministry of St. Cecilia Parish invites all friends and supporters of the LGBT community to a Mass in celebration of Boston’s Pride Month. The theme of the liturgy, ‘All Are Welcome,’ honors Christ’s message of hope and salvation to all people. We will also celebrate the diverse community that finds its home at St. Cecilia."

What a lovely message, and one that was obviously culled form the Book of God Is Love. But then the conservative members of the Church, got their collars and shrouds and granny pants in a twist, and demanded that the archdiocese intervene.

And they trotted out their spokesbigot, Terrence Donilon, who is rereading the Book Of God Hates Fags, to say: “The wording and placement of a bulletin notice announcing that the St. Cecilia Rainbow Ministry will be joining the parish at a Mass on June 19 may have given the unintended impression that the Mass is in support of Gay Pride Week; it is not."

Father Unni, the pastor of St. Cecilia's has not commented, but Donilon said that he spoke for the parish and that the decision was made by senior officials at the archdiocese.

Foot stomp. Head snap.

Donilon, of course, took no questions about the apparent contradiction of the church’s bulletin and his statement, but did say that there would be a Mass sometime in the future to welcome the community, though not specifically the LGBT community.

It is written in The Book Of God Hates Fags, you know.

But then, just as the conservative Catholics railed about homosexuality and sin and pride, and how they loved the sinner but hate the sin, except if the sin is hate, Father Unni had something to say, and, upon finishing his sermon, received an actual standing ovation from his parishioners.

Father Unni:. “You are welcome here, gay or straight, rich or poor, young or old, black or white. Here, you all can say, ‘I can worship the God who made me as I am. [G]ood love always requires sacrifice. We are being called to do not what is easy, but what is holy.’’

“We are not this renegade, crazy, liberal church. We’re just Christians trying to live the gospel."

And preach the word of The Book Of God Is Love.

He Was A Great Teacher, But Was Fired Anyway

Jan Buterman is a transgendered person. And a teacher.

In 2008, he received a letter from the Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools that praised him for his teaching abilities.

Then he was fired for not being aligned with the values of the Catholic Church.

In other words, for being transgendered.

The Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools offered up a settlement of sorts: Buterman would receive a cash payout of $78,000 or or a one-year teaching job as long as he shut his transgendered yap about being fired, and dropped his human rights complaint.

Jan Buterman gave a big F-U to the Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools, because, as he says, “I don’t want to be muzzled. They don’t want me to talk about the fact that they, as an employer, claiming authority from the Catholic Church, have discriminated against me because of my medical status as a transsexual person.”

But he knows that his human rights complaint might be dismissed, as the Catholic school board is expected to ask the Alberta Human Rights Commission to drop the complaint since a “fair and reasonable settlement” was offered.

But is it fair? To pay him off with cash or a one-year job just so he won't file a complaint? Is that fair and reasonable?

Hardly. It's a payoff. They've taken his job, for which the Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools praised him, and asked him to simply keep quiet.

What's fair about that? Or even reasonable?

David Keohane, superintendent of the Catholic school district, says the board has been working with the human rights commission to try to ensure the offer is seen as fair and reasonable: “It is about how the commission is being satisfied with how we are dealing with the issue and the appearance of being reasonable. Everything is completely reasonable ... given the absolute nature of how the issue represented itself, and we believe that we have been abundantly fair.”

Buying silence is fair, I guess, to the Catholic Church. I mean, haven't they tried this with victims of pedophile priests? Offering those innocent children and their families a little cash to keep quiet.

Fair. Reasonable.

And, apparently, the Alberta Teachers’ Association also thinks the cash payoff, er, payout, is fair. The union will no longer pay for Buterman’s lawyers, calling the bribe, er, payout, “substantial”. They also advised Buterman that rejecting the settlement because of its confidentiality clause could make Buterman look bad.

I don't think he looks bad. I think he looks like a teacher, lauded for his teaching skills, who was fired without cause simply for being transgendered. I think, if anything, it makes the Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools look bad.

Buying silence. But, as I've said, this is nothing new to the Catholic Church. They've been buying silence for decades in order to save face.
